Romanticizing Rest

I used to feel guilty for needing rest. Like I had to earn it, justify it, or hide it. Like taking a day off meant I was falling behind — not just in work or school, but in life.

But lately, I’ve been learning to romanticize rest — not just tolerate it, but honor it. To see peace as something worth protecting.

We’re all hustling these days, right? Juggling careers, school, family—it’s a lot. And honestly, it can feel impossible to squeeze in some downtime. The tough part is, sometimes people think needing a break means you’re just being lazy. I’ve totally been there, especially with schoolwork. After grinding hard, the idea of finally taking a breather often bumps up against the pressure to just finish or the feeling that I’m slacking off. This whole struggle, where I can’t truly just “chill,” really shows why I think rest is super important for taking care of yourself.

For me, romanticizing rest isn’t always about perfect aesthetics like candles or calming playlists. Sometimes it’s totally chill, like napping without an ounce of guilt, or bailing on plans without feeling the need to explain myself. It can also be finding comfort in rewatching a familiar show, simply existing while curled up with a plushie, or temporarily setting aside my to-do list. And you know what? That’s perfectly fine. These aren’t setbacks; they’re just me reclaiming my peace.

Choosing to rest in a world that’s always pushing productivity is a pretty rebellious act. It’s like making a quiet, radical decision to say, “Hey, my worth isn’t just about how much I get done.” It’s about picking peace, even when everything around you is screaming, “Work harder!” And remember, resting isn’t giving up; it’s just giving yourself what you genuinely need.

If you’re in a phase of slowing down—maybe that means canceling plans, sleeping in, or just taking a mental breather—I totally get it. You’re not falling behind, you’re not broken, and you’re definitely not lazy. You’re just human. And honoring your peace? That’s a real act of self-respect. Let’s start making rest look good again, and treat peace like the powerful strength it truly is.
